Hi friends! I can’t believe it is already half way through September and I haven’t even blogged much about what we got up to in August. So here is a little recap of the month, it was a busy one so grab a cup of tea and get comfy.
At the first of the month my mother in law and her boyfriend came to Australia to visit for three weeks. They arrived the day before Leighton’s birthday party and it was so fun to have them there. After the birthday celebrations, we spent the next week exploring Brisbane.
We went to the Mt. Cootha lookout on the first day to get a 360 view of Brisbane in the stunning weather.
After the lookout we went down the mountain to the botanical gardens, there are two in Brisbane, one here and one in the city. It was such a pretty day and we had a lovely time wandering around and having lunch in the cafe.
We spent a morning in Redcliffe, and showed them the home of the Beegees. First, we went to pelican park where we saw these guys followed by a fish and chips lunch and a play in the adorable Captain Cook park.
Saturday we took a day trip to the Gold Coast, to our favorite beach town- Burleigh Heads. It was too cold to get in the water but we did a walk and enjoyed lunch at the surf club. Leighton’s favorite part was the shopping.
Sandy and Chris left the next day for Hamilton Island (lucky) meanwhile we carried on our regular activities. One day Houston had a doctor’s appointment and my friend, Lindsay, took care of Leighton. She kept me updated with the cutest pictures of Leighton and Stone reading, dancing and entertaining each other. How stinking cute are they?!
While they were gone, there was a public holiday for the state fair called Ekka. We have yet to make it to the fair, but we took advantage of Trav having a random Wednesday off and had brunch at a new (to us) spot called Scout. It was super hipster and we were probably judged for bringing our two kids in to such a small cafe, but the food was excellent.
Leighton and I enjoyed some tea on the front porch, one of our new favorite things to do during Houston’s late afternoon nap.
Saturday night we hit up Eat Street Markets, which is always fun to take visitors too. How cute is Houston bundled up in his sister’s monogrammed pink blanket? Eat Street is a giant permanent outdoor venue with food stalls (in shipping containers) from every where in the world. There are also bars, stages for live music, and shops set up too. It’s right along the river so we can take the ferry right there.
Best picture ever. Houston cracking it and a random toddler photo bomb.
The next week we checked off a big visitor to do- the koala sanctuary. I have been so many times but it never gets old. I love seeing people’s reactions when they get to feed a kangaroo or hold a koala! Houston’s shirt that day was way too accurate.
We spent a day in the city, checked out the City Botanical Gardens (my favorite), had lunch with Trav and did some shopping. Everyone was pooped on the bus home.
Leighton showing off her new swim hat from her Sassy before a coffee date and then her post- babychino face.
Houston’s gift from Sassy was the softest blue bathrobe. Travis and I snuck in a date night while we had babysitters (although I didn’t get any pics). I met Trav in the city and couldn’t remember the last time I had been down there without a kid.
Leighton started a gymnastics class the last Friday they were in town (her birthday gift from Sandy), so it was fun that they were able to come watch. The word class is probably used loosely when talking about two year olds, but they loved climbing and balancing on the big foam shapes and practicing their somersaults.
Chris and Sandy’s last day in Brisbane was spent in the West End neighborhood, checking out the farmer’s market then boundary street for shopping and brewery hopping. We attempted a photo of the four of us, and this was the best we could get.
Sunday we said goodbye to our visitors, it was so sad to see them go! They were staying in an airbnb just down the road from us and we got so used to having them nearby. Luckily we will be in Texas in three and a half months!
The last week in August was spent doing normal things. Houston had another appointment so Leighton (and Abby) spent the morning at Stone’s house and she was too excited.
I went to a coffee shop and bookstore alone with both kids and no stroller. That alone is worth mentioning. We survived and got Trav’s father’s day present. No one wanted to nap that afternoon but I won’t turn down the cuddles.
Trav worked late and so Leighton and I had a pizza and movie night. We watched trolls and painted her toe nails, it was so much fun.
More father’s day shopping and couch cuddles wrapped up August for us. It was such a fun, busy month!
If you made it through this whole post, congrats! I promise to blog a bit more frequently this month.
